On 13 May, the ‘Deadly Families ARE Happy, Safe and Strong’ Fun Day was held for the fifth year running at Riverway in Townsville.
The aim of the event is for families to have fun, and to celebrate healthy and respectful relationships among individuals, families and communities. The event also aims to raise awareness of domestic and family violence and highlight local support services that are available in the local community.
This year’s event was an overwhelming success with more than 3,000 children, adults and families enjoying the fun day and 25 local community services providers and government agencies in attendance to start a conversation about their services. The different services focussed on promoting what they provide to families in the community to enhance families’ safety and wellbeing, with a ‘service hunt’ organised by Family and Child Connect.
Event attendees enjoyed a variety of stalls and activities facilitated by local community services, agencies and other stall holders, including a free sausage sizzle, fruit, tea & coffee along with free entertainment, and rides and activities for the kids.
The organising committee included representatives from The Smith Family, North Queensland Domestic Violence Resource Service, Relationships Australia, Mercy Community Services’ Family and Child Connect, Save the Children, Queensland Health, and Victims Assist Queensland.
We were very pleased to hear that the event has also received a further two years of funding from the Townsville City Council, which will enable us to continue to promote services that create better-connected families and communities.
